Post Ranch Inn 47900 Highway 1 Big Sur, CA
Along the most wildly beautiful stretch of California’s famous coastal road, Highway One, is Big Sur, an area famous in the 1960s for a freewheeling vibe that attracted the likes of writer Jack Kerouac. You’ll still find a trace of that boho spirit, albeit in a gloriously upmarket setting, at the Post Ranch Inn. Its 41 suites and cabins perch on the cliffs 400 metres above sea level, with endless views of sky and ocean. Inside it’s all about quiet luxury, with curvy walls of glass, slate and local redwood, a squashy leather sofa and woodburning stove. Outside you’ll find forest walks, a spa and a cliff-top hot tub. The superb Sierra Mar restaurant offers a locally sourced menu and good wine list. There’s a telescope on its cantilevered terrace; most nights a resident astronomer is on hand to guide you through the heavens. Doubles from £421.
