Roebuck Inn Hotel

Cheshire

PICPOUL 2

For a trip to Provence without the air miles, look no further than The Roebuck Inn. This French-feel bistro dates back to 1708 and its Grade II listed building fits seamlessly into the timeless Cheshire village of Mobberley, where a jaunt around pretty rural lanes reveals perfectly kept cricket grounds and gothic churches.

On your return, the European-inspired restaurant beckons, with exposed brickwork and leather benches, while candlelit, café-style tables set the romantic scene. Head chef Andrew Towers combines Italian and British flavours with French and the menu is made up of both small and main plates. You'll find buffalo burrata, French onion soup, slow-braised beef bourguignon and Peroni-battered fish and chips. And nothing says British-French fusion more than a sticky toffee crème brulée to finish. After, retreat to one of the six rustically dressed rooms, all named after old world grapes. Each has its own personality, but you can expect period features, roll-top baths, vintage artwork and a royal mix of fabrics. Come breakfast, choose between homemade granola or a full English with farm eggs, and before you leave, stock up on local ales and artisan produces from the small store on site.

Doubles from £125, including breakfast. 01565 873939, roebuckinnmobberley.co.uk
