Torstraße 1, 10119 Berlin, Germany
This art deco dream in Berlin’s Mitte district is ideal for a base to explore the German capital. In the vast lobby, interiors are industrial-luxe to the nth – think Damien Hirst murals, sparkling chandeliers, velvet upholstery and concrete floors laden with heavy Persian rugs framing an iron spiral staircase. The clientele is as interesting as the rich history of this Grade II-listed landmark – a former Jewish-owned department store, which later served as the headquarters for the National Socialist Party and Communist Party’s Central Committee in the mid-20th century. Having opened under the Soho House banner in 2010, it has 65 bedrooms and 20 apartments that carry the warm design ethos throughout and house, without doubt, the most sumptuous beds. Amenities including a full stash of every Cowshed product under the sun. Even the smallest of bedrooms are generous in size, yet remain cosy across the board. The lounge area has a vintage bar, stacks of literature, open fireplaces and comfy sofas to while away afternoons over a solid bistro menu. Downstairs, the spa offers a hammam with a cool bunker style. Alternatively, a green rooftop pool is open to the brave in the cooler months. You’ll be rewarded with knockout views… and the water’s heated to 26C, even in snow. BG. Doubles from. £125, sohohouseberlin.com
