The Chedi Andermatt Hotel

Andermatt, Switzerland

Make your base in Switzerland this high-altitude haven, where interiors are warm and inviting and the pistes outside world-class, with dedicated ‘ski butlers’ to help you navigate them.

Cocooned between the soaring peaks of Gotthard and Furka passes, 1,447m above sea level in the glistening Swiss Alps, The Chedi is Andermatt's most notable address. Mixing Alpine charm and a sleek Asian aesthetic across its 123 rooms and suites, the five-star design is playful yet luxurious – think fur cushions interspersed with paper lanterns and plenty of intricate latticework. But while the interiors are gorgeous, it’s the slopes just outside that you’ll really want to see. Keeping skis polished, boots warm and a map of snow-sure pistes on hand, The Chedi’s ski butlers are Andermatt’s answer to real-life angels. Forget slogging your skis over your shoulder and heading to overcrowded slopes: the dedicated team will happily assist with loading up your cable car and pointing out the best runs to tackle.

Back at base, evenings should be spent sinking into one of three heated swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), before making a tricky decision on which of the hotel’s five tempting restaurants to dine in. Our favourite is The Japanese Restaurant, whose five- to ten-course Kaiseki menu delivers an authentic experience, best paired with a glass of saké. For those who still have energy to extend the night further, the cosy Cigar Lounge and Wine Library await, where you can plot your course for the following day’s snowy action.
