Hertfordshire, England
If ever a tone were set at breakfast, it’s the case at the lavish and titanic buffet at The Grove. We’re talking physalis and figs, a vegan trolly, whole stations dedicated to plump French toast, waffles, pancakes, heaps of smoked salmon and cured meats – all laid out in The Glasshouse, a lofty conservatory looking out over manicured gardens. Your gastronomic journey could continue later on the spacious outdoor terrace of The Stables, with hearty British classics updated using ingredients grown on site; or perhaps with an aromatic taste of New Delhi at Madhu’s (where they also serve High Chai afternoon tea), or a simple plate of well executed sushi in the lounge.
This ‘something for everyone’ approach isn’t limited to food choices, though – it percolates all aspects of a stay at this country house hotel, set in 121 hectares. Golfers will go weak at the knees at the sight of the award-winning course (once played by Tiger Woods), while the black-tiled pool and extensive treatment menu will impress even the most seasoned spa-goer. To explore the winding woodland trails, guests can hire bikes (or mini-Land Rovers for children) and there’s also a kids’ club, while teens might try their hand at axe-throwing or archery. Even canine guests are welcomed with beds and toys laid out in anticipation of their arrival.
Once the family seat of earls, the Georgian section of the Grade II listed building honours its history with 12 grand suites that have been exquisitely renovated. The bulk of the rooms are to be found in the modern extension – and what they lack in period detail they more than make up for in comfort.
Thoughtful design allows the old and new to sit amicably alongside each other – nowhere more so than in the Walled Garden, part of which remains traditional kitchen garden (supplying The Potting Shed pop-up in a lean-to Victorian greenhouse). The rest houses an urban beach, heated outdoor pool, tennis court and outdoor cinema. This is country house turned country club, all inside the M25, with something to tickle all tastes.
