Hong Kong
Towering above the cityscape, The Upper House creates a sense of home, albeit it one with vast, monolithic sculptures and unusually luxurious limestone baths. Moving through the flawlessly designed space – from the Stone Curtain entrance (designed by British Thomas Heatherwick) to the double-height restaurant, Salisterra, on the 49th floor – there’s something almost ecclesiastical about the space and sense of serenity. It’s muted, understated but so carefully curated, with each texture, shadow and throw of light purposeful and theatrical. The rooms are atranquil escape from the buzzy hangouts on Startstreet Precinct below. Padded window seats are the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy the views over Hong Kong's skyline and across to the harbour. Alongside vast bathrooms and rainfall showers is the option of in-room treatments (massages, facials, manicures). And, with complimentary group yoga and meditation available at The Lawn (an outside space on level six), it more than compensates for the absence of a hotel spa. Nestled in the garden is The Tea Room – it’s architect André Fu at his finest, all curves and folding screens to create a whimsical den-like space. There's also The Continental (a European-inspired café) but Salisterra is the crowning glory. As if the 49th floor views didn't summon enough drama, a vast chandelier of 80 glass lanterns casts light over the intricate plates that are whisked out of the kitchen. It’s a sensational spot for dinner – but breakfasts are impressive too: the likes of grilled salmon, seasonal pickles, set custards and hot, crisp youtiao doughnuts. The Upper House goes out of its way to be family-friendly too, from kids’ menus to workshops and play rooms, it’s as inclusive as it is chic.
