The Woolpack Hotel

Warehorne, England

Bonkers, bizarre and beautiful, The Woolpack has bucked every contemporary design trend and put the Farrow and Ball paint swatches so common in country hotels these days firmly in the shade. Say goodbye to sage walls as, instead, the Romney Marsh sheep grazing outside the village church opposite have been the main source of inspiration. In our suite, Honeychild, milk churns have been repurposed into bins, pitchforks rest up against sheepskin rugs and the two-person freestanding bathtub (all five rooms have one) sits atop a bed of grass, watched over by a papier-mâché taxidermy-style cow’s head. Food-wise, things are less bonkers and more brilliant. Expect finessed pub classics: whisky-glazed pork ribs come with Jack Daniels sauce and freshly caught cod from Dungeness Fish Hut are made into succulent fish fingers sandwiches. Local produce comes from nearby brewers, butchers and fisherman, plus, as an added incentive, for every £1 spent, 60p goes back to the local community. Explore the other outposts in this small family of inns by rambling, walking, cycling or kayaking along the marshes – you won’t find any black sheep.
