Just when you think the lush tropical landscape of Sri Lanka can’t get any more alluring, up pops Trebartha East: The Round House, taking views to new heights.
Designed by Professor Narein Perera, the award-winning structureoffers 360-degree vistas across a 5ha cinnamon plantation (currently being revived), rice paddies, jungleand as far as the Indian Ocean.
Grand on design, the hotel goes big on intimacy and sustainability too, with just four elegant rooms, each named after the local wood used –kumbuk, jak, hora and teak – andfeaturing floor-to-ceiling windowsand four poster beds. From here, take a tuk-tuk to the coastal town ofAhangama, head to historic GalleFort, watch turtle hatching (Januaryto March) at Koggala Beach or spot wild elephants in Udawalawe National Park. Back at base, slow the pace with a guided yoga session or dip in the 18m curved pool and end the day diving into local flavours at the farm-to-table restaurant.
