Sri Lanka
Tucked away in the outskirts of Galle, south-west Sri Lanka, is a hidden paradise: Why House. Lounging by the vast pool in a garden teeming with tropical plants, it’s hard to imagine anywhere less aligned to the daily reality of a British winter – yet somehow the word ‘homely’ is what keeps coming to mind. It’s no doubt down to the ever-welcoming presence of manager-owner Henrietta, who (Dachshund in tow) curates everything from the blockprint bed throws to babysitting services.
Breakfasts are a relaxed affair with local options like buffalo curd at the buffet, and curries cooked to order. Kick off evenings with an arrack sour before tucking into more Sri Lankan dishes – don’t miss the house banana chutney. The ten rooms in the main house, plus garden villas and cabanas, are perfectly set up for multi- generational holidays and, with the beach and Galle Fort nearby, there’s something for everyone.
