Retford, Nottinghamshire
With a guest book signed by such luminaries as Bing Crosby and Joan Crawford, converted 17th-century farm Ye Olde Bell rose to fame back in the days of stagecoaches and highwaymen. Its most recent owners, Paul and Hilary Levack, have overseen a full-scale renovation since taking over in 2002: the 59 individually decorated bedrooms reflect the place’s old-fashioned appeal. Relax in the spa, explore the gardens, then linger over an accomplished, locally sourced menu created by head chef Keith Firth.
