Tanzania
At the end of an unpaved track, Zuri Zanzibar emerges – all tropical gardens and stilted villas dressed in nyasi grass thatch. Just 50km from Stone Town, this oasis backs on to a stretch of pristine, white-sand beach lapped by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The hotel is deeply centred in its sense of place – not just in the laid-back Zanzibari vibe or furniture sculpted from retired dhows, but also in plentiful seafood cooked to perfection across three restaurants – think slipper lobster or lemongrass skewers threaded with calamari. Those feeling inspired can join the Swahili Cooking Classes that include a tour of the abundant spice garden and a lesson in preparing coconut milk and poaching octopus in it. There’s no shortage of activities across the board: whether it’s diving some of Unguja’s best reefs and deep-sea fishing, lounging in the infinity pool or browsing the open-air library, there’s something for all tastes at this well curated all-rounder.
Doubles for £300.
