The most decorated chocolatier at the Great Taste Awards this year, Demarquette specialises in quirky, flavoured ganachefilled chocolates. Stock up on Moroccan mint or Tunisian bharat ganache at the Chelsea store.
Extraordinary filled chocolate bars are one of Berger’s most popular creations, and with unique flavours such as rowanberry schnapps, hay
flower and spruce sap, it’s easy to see why. They could fill a catalogue with all their other specialities, from rum truffles to premium bitter drinking chocolate.
Founded by the chocolatier to the French royal family, this place is a must-see for its long history as much as its traditional chocolate creations.
Based on ganache, but softer and creamier, nama chocolate (meaning fresh) is Japan’s current obsession. Nakanishi Hirofumi rises at four in the morning to prepare them for his tearoom and shop near Heian Shrine in historic Kyoto. He produces just three flavours: Trappist liqueur, matcha and shochu (rice spirit).
A somewhat off-beat shop, specialising in American delights such as chocolate-covered cheerios or sunflower seed brittle.
A perfumery? A jewellers? No, it’s Bubo – chocolate shop, patisserie and tapas bar in one. Owner Carles Mempel’s chocolate cake won the World Chocolate Masters in 2005, but his ‘Bubo’, a white chocolate mousse with citrus cream, a coconut sponge and lime, wouldn’t look lost in Bilbao’s Guggenheim.
Inspired by William Curley’s creations starting on page 5? Visit his shops in Belgravia, Richmond or at Harrods to taste his confections, including a nostalgia range that features his own version of jaffa cakes.
Located in the heart of the historic Distillery District, Soma does plain old chocolate extremely well. Made in tiny batches, from cocoa beans sourced from hand-picked Fair Trade and organic plantations around the world, it is fresh and flavourful. Try their chocolate-tumbled roasted hazelnuts; an in-house café does top-notch gelato and hot chocolate, too.
