Kamalaya Koh Samui

Renew and Restore

As life speeds up and screens claim ever more of our attention, travellers are increasingly seeking escapes that help them reset. Beyond hotel spas and pampering, these are specialised retreats created wholly for wellbeing, where nourishing food, expert guidance and nature-led rituals work together to support deep restoration. Xenia Taliotis introduces the destinations that genuinely understand modern pressures — and offer renewal that lingers long after you return home

Kamalaya, Koh Samui Thailand

This long-established wellness retreat has built its reputation on something increasingly rare in the industry: restraint. Villas and treatment pavilions are folded into steep, green hillsides threaded with palms and natural rock on the quieter, southern coast of Koh Samui, with the sound of water running through the grounds. Guests arrive with different aims – to sleep better, recover from stress or regain structure after a period of imbalance, perhaps. Each stay begins with a detailed consultation that shapes a personalised programme with options ranging from three-night resets to 21-night immersions and longer wellbeing sabbaticals. From there, the retreat’s depth of expertise becomes clear: more than 100 specialists work across its clinics and treatment spaces, including naturopaths, practitioners of Chinese medicine, western physicians, registered nurses, nutritionists, life-transformation mentors, Ayurvedic and Thai therapists, as well as teachers of yoga, meditation and breathwork. At Longevity House, functional medicine and regenerative therapies – from IV infusions to ozone and hyperbaric oxygen – come together in a focused, holistic approach to healthy ageing. The retreat also prioritises learning, offering thoughtful talks on themes such as circadian rhythm and emotional resilience. Food is core to the holistic approach here. Alongside an à la carte menu that stays firmly on the wholesome side, both restaurants offer dedicated detox options, with buffet dishes clearly marked for guests managing allergies, looking to lose weight or simply seeking a gentler reset. Mornings begin with a breakfast buffet of vibrant, plant-based ingredients and wholesome dishes – nut and seed butters, fermented vegetables and delicate carrot-and-courgette bread, to name but a few – accompanied by tropical fruits and refreshing detox infusions. Naturopaths might suggest small, personalised touches, such as a soothing ‘lullaby’ drink for guests struggling to drift off. Rest is rarely elusive here, however, thanks to an extensive in-room pillow menu with premium hypoallergenic options and mattress toppers designed for tailored comfort.

Schloss Elmau Bavaria, Germany

There’s no doubt this imposing former castle, deep in the Bavarian Alps and about an hour from Munich, means business. As befits a property that has hosted G7 summits, it’s a place where you feel primed to make life-shaping decisions, whether staying in the 1916 castle, now the Hideaway, or the sleek 2015 Retreat. An intellectual thread runs through the atmosphere – Yehudi Menuhin, Alfred Brendel and Ian McEwan were past guests – and there’s an extraordinary programme of concerts, readings and talks. Wellness is on a large scale too: six spas, eight pools, seven saunas and 20-plus treatment rooms, including the largest hammam west of Istanbul, with guests drifting between steam rituals and mountain-view pools. Specialised retreats range from tai chi to Gaga – unguided, expressive ‘wild dancing’. Dining is also larger than life, with ten restaurants embracing everything from hearty fondue to light, elegant Japanese-French fusion at the two-Michelin-starred Ikigai.

Santani Wellness Kandy Sri Lanka

Weave through misty mountains and verdant forest reserves to reach rolling tea terraces, home to a remote 47ha former tea plantation in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Santani Wellness Kandy makes the most of this extraordinary setting with glasswalled rooms, open-air villas and seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, immersing guests in nature while offering quiet corners for reflection and stillness. Each guest undergoes a consultation to personalise Ayurvedic therapies, detox programmes and nutrition. More than a dozen programmes are available, from Recovery, for emotional or physical trauma, to No-Pause, supporting holistic management of menopause, and even specialised support for addiction. Yoga, meditation and guided nature walks are as important as treatments in allowing guests to unwind. Daios Cove Agios Nikolaos, Crete

Balancing rugged Cretan beauty with refined luxury, Daios Cove is built into a secluded cove near Agios Nikolaos. Stone-clad villas cascade down towards a private beach, while an infinity pool and six restaurants – including a Ducasse-influenced fine-dining room and cocktails by Athens mixology stars The Clumsies – give the resort a cosmopolitan polish. It’s ideal for travellers who want the rigour of a medical-style wellness programme without sacrificing the pleasures of an indulgent hotel stay. Kepos by Goco, the 2,500sq m wellness centre, blends traditional spa therapies with advanced treatments such as cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen and high-tech facials, all shaped by ancient Greek philosophy and Epicurus’s vision of a ‘garden of wellbeing’. Guests can start with detailed diagnostics before moving into personalised therapies or joining movement classes such as Pilates or aerial yoga. The signature hydrotherapy circuit is the highlight: a restorative progression through steam, showers, heated pools and powerful massage jets, ending in a Finnish sauna that leaves muscles loose and the mind quietened – a full-body reset in the truest sense.

The resort’s wellness philosophy is practical and immersive: guests start each day with guidance in mindfulness and mind training, designed to quiet any unhelpful thoughts and establish routines that will extend far beyond the retreat. Tailored programmes address specific concerns such as stress and emotional imbalance or focus on detoxing, gut health, better immunity or sleep and weight management. Treatments – from lymphatic drainage to aromatherapy massages – are intended to restore energy and vitality, while workshops and fitness sessions teach tools to help you develop a balanced work-life rhythm. The NŪTRIŌ dining concept blends locally sourced produce with ingredients from the resort’s own permaculture garden.
