A Unique Identity

Tucked between France to the north and Spain to the south, Andorra is a nation of staunch independence and a steadfast identity in which its Catalan cultural roots and mountain dwelling traditions converge. Here, at the heart of the Pyrenees–its capital, Andorra la Vella sitting at 1,023 metres above sea level–both inhabitants and passers through revel in the fresh mountain air, seasonal produce-led gastronomy and surrounding nature – all attributed with helping make life expectancy in Andorra the fifth highest in the world.

While winter brings snowfall, opening up southern Europe’s largest skiable area, the summers are reliably warm, making this the ideal time to explore the undulating alpine terrain on foot. Spectacular landscapes span Andorra’s 468 square kilometres, with protected areas including the UNESCO-listed Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, which takes up 10 percent of the territory, Sorteny Valley Natural Park and Comapedrosa Valleys Natural Park. Andorra’s northernmost parish, Ordino, has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With around 20 museums, covering art, history and ethnography among other topics, this is a nation of great cultural richness too, as citizens take pride in sharing over a thousand years of history.

Connection to Nature

Mountains, forest, rivers, lakes and meadows make up more than 90 percent of this high-altitude state, which stretches from the foot of these mountains’ valleys to its 65 peaks rising up to elevations of over 2,900 metres above sea level. More than 100 hiking trails crisscross this spectacular landscape and as many as 30 mountain shelters host guests overnight within the mountainous terrain.

The GRP (Grand Randonnée Pays)–typically completed in seven stages–loops around the entire country, passing through areas of natural beauty. Across the nation, different hiking routes cater for all audiences and abilities, allowing all visitors to discover the country’s natural environment. Cycling, both road and mountain biking, also opens up this landscape, with more than 21 mountain passes and over 600 kilometres of mountain bike routes to explore. In summer, Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal, Ordino Arcalis and Naturland resorts offer a whole host of activities from horse riding to ziplining and 4x4 excursions.

Mountain Gastronomy

Andorra’s culinary identity stems from the traditions, climate and alpine landscape defining this country. Here, amid the mountains and valleys, chefs, producers and artisan makers tell Andorra’s gastronomic story through the cultivation and transformation of local ingredients. Sheep and goat cheeses, cured meats, mountain trout and wild mushrooms count among zero-kilometre products, with artisanal honey, chocolate, jams and coffee adding to the local food scene, which is complemented by artisan gin, craft beers and high-altitude wines.

Honest dishes, showing the pride these chefs and makers take in being a part of the deep-rooted community, showcase the nation’s culinary riches at historic bordes. In these traditional mountain houses, which have been converted into welcoming restaurants, Andorran produce comes in traditional dishes like Escudella (Catalan stew), Andorran-style river trout and roasted snails. Contemporary Andorran gastronomy follows the same ethos, with chefs including Francis Paniego of Michelin-starred Ibaya putting a creative spin on local flavours. The nation’s landmark culinary event, Andorra Taste, draws prominent names in the world of gastronomy to the territory for a celebration of this traditional and contemporary mountain fare.
